“When we enter life as a question to be lived rather than a problem to be solved, we can find our way in the world.” Mark Nepo, from “The One Life We’re Given”, Page 63.
We aren’t very comfortable in ‘not knowing’. I think it is our human nature to want to have a plan or some kind of security. We like to have it worked out so that we can flow through life a bit easier. Once the problems are solved, once the questions are answered…well, then we’ll be alright. We don’t understand or maybe never thought of the value of not knowing.
I think there is a great freedom in living in and around the questions of life. Quite the opposite of what we might initially feel, there is actually an ease and an opening up that happens when we are willing to live in the question. In our willingness we let go of our resistance, we are less anxious. Even when we seem to be living in the completeness of the ‘final answer’ we are wise to be open to the next question and not so attached to what we know. Richard, a dear teacher in my life, often said that a plan or a direction is one that is simply cast in jello!
We can live in the ebb and flow of life…knowing and not knowing…confident in a direction or in the question…and always allow open space for something new, something beyond. All of life cast in jello, awaiting the next question to open us up, ignite our imagination and carry us further along the path.
What is the uncertainty in your life? Can you be confident living in the question? Take a deep breath, release the idea of not knowing and just be still for a moment. You will find your way.
All is well
