May there be some beautiful surprise
Waiting for you inside death,
Something you never knew or felt,
Which with one simple touch,
Absolves you of all loneliness and loss,
As you quicken within the embrace
For which your soul was eternally made.
Excerpt from the poem For the Dying in the book To Bless the Space Between Us, by John O’Donohue
The experience of the death of a loved one is difficult. Grief is an emotion that carries us into the far recesses of our own mind, leaving us feeling lost and ill at ease. We feel disconnected from the world around us…it all looks and feels different. Things that were important before are not even on our radar. When we feel loss deep in our heart it seems that life will never be the same.
I wonder if these words by John O’Donohue might help in those moments of deep and utter despair…to imagine my dearest love being surprised to know and to feel the magnificence of his own soul…for her to experience no lack of any kind, only eternal bliss. Could I imagine him soaring and smiling and being filled with all goodness…could I imagine her in the embrace of Love forever?
And if I could imagine this, could I feel happiness in my heart once again?
Much, much love
