What does it mean to honor yourself? From dictionary.com…to honor means to treat with high respect. Do you treat yourself with high respect?
As with all spiritual work, the first step is awareness. We can’t possibly honor ourselves if we move through life, forever pushing and striving forward without pausing to consider. Respect requires thoughtful consideration…and therefore a pause in our striving, in our rut of doing and in our “blinders on, get it done” daily grind.
I believe that honoring yourself begins with knowing what you really want and then making decisions and taking action to support that. So, what do you really want….today, this year, for the rest of your life? How do you really want to be…kind, compassionate, giving, happy, active, peaceful, supportive, caring? Do you want to be a leader, an innovator, a parent, an artist, a mechanic, a healer, a teacher, a musician? What excites you, what makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, what skill do you have that people recognize?
Knowing what you really want requires that you pause to understand your own self…what makes you tick, when you are most happy and when you feel most alive! Knowing yourself is the first step in honoring yourself. You can treat yourself with high respect when you are aware of what you really want. And then you can make decisions and take action in pursuit of your desires.
Honoring yourself involves deep consideration and respect for yourself and kindness toward others…it is not done at the expense of others or in mean-spiritedness. Honoring yourself comes from the heart…it is confidence in your dreams and desires.
You will notice that deeply and respectfully honoring yourself allows you to live life with freedom and excited anticipation. Honor yourself in all you do and say and in every action you take.
Peace always
