Sometimes I Forget

Sometimes I am so serious. After all there are serious issues to be addressed, there is serious work to be done and there are serious matters that need attention. Seriously?

What about not taking life so seriously? What about remembering the important stuff?

Sometimes I forget. I forget that just being alive is extraordinary. I forget to be grateful for the simple pleasure of waking up in the morning.

Sometimes I forget what really matters to me…things like meaningful relationships, children, connecting to people, time to be still, time to think about possibilities, compassion and forgiveness.

Sometimes I forget to take really good care of myself. I forget that I’m really important.

Sometimes I forget to say please and thank you…for every small kindness…every one. My sister is great at this. To the grocery store clerk, the bus driver, the bank teller…she says “Thanks for coming to work today!”

Sometimes I forget to smile, to soften my face and let my eyes light up. I forget that this one small gesture could entirely change someone’s day, including my own.

Sometimes I forget that I won’t be here forever and that every moment is my chance to live not quite so seriously.

My “not so serious self” is kind, joyful, aware and at ease. She sees through loving eyes. She is inspired to be her very best.

Who is your “not so serious” self?

Dedicated to my dear friend Beth. I love you.

  1. This was just what I needed today. I have a hectic job and feel myself getting lost in it sometimes. I have felt my sweet husband become frustrated at my rushy busy nonsense. I have a hard time stopping myself from rushing friends and family off the phone when really they are the ones that really matter. I have forgotten to take better care of myself and have found myself in a whirl of things that don’t really matter in the big picture. Resolving to do better.

  2. Thank you, Paula. Perfect. Beautiful. This perfectly captures the essence of what most of us need & truly desire to hear from those we consider spiritual leaders. Real here-and-now, from the heart, human, loving…a reminder that we’re all tackling similar issues with your loving words being a personal guidepost.

  3. Thank you for the time and thoughtfulness that goes into your blog.I look forward to it.
    Blessings.
