What Moves You?

“I tell you something I read in the Bible,” King says, “There’s a passage in 1 John I’m going to paraphrase: If a man has the resources to take care of people and to help people when they’re in need and he doesn’t do it, then it’s wrong. And that’s something that’s been on my heart. When I read that I knew I had to do it. And I came down here.” Troy King from a story by John Burnett, NPR News

Troy King is from the East Texas town of Carthage, two hundred miles north of Houston. He works at a lumber factory making plywood, and fishes for crappie in his flat-bottom boat. He says he saw the Houston floods on the news and it moved him.

What moves you? How often do you feel moved, from the inside, but fail to take action? There is nothing that stops dreams or possibilities cold in their tracks more than our choice to not follow what moves us.

If we wait too long, we find more than a few reasons NOT to follow this urge from within. We can create obstacles a plenty and ignore where our heart is trying to lead us. We make excuses, we create stories, we rationalize, we let others talk us out of it, we think someone else could do it better, we don’t want to be bothered, we don’t want to upset our cozy life.

It takes a little courage…and sometimes a lot of courage…to follow your heart. It requires change, it requires that you actually walk your talk, it requires that you set aside some comfort in exchange for living a full and meaningful life. It is stepping into the unknown.

Here’s what I know…the thing that moves you is real. It is the soul of you, it is the potential residing in you. It has all of the power of the Universe behind it. It is calling you higher…to be who you came here to be.

So listen, notice what’s on your heart…feel the power of the Universe behind it…step over your doubt…and say YES!

I don’t know how many people Troy rescued from the floodwaters. I imagine he might have lost count. I also imagine that he doesn’t consider himself any sort of hero. He just felt the urge in his heart and had the courage to follow where it was leading.

Thank you Troy King…for showing us how it’s done.

Much love
Paula

  1. James 2:14 What good is it my brothers, if a man claims o have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?

James 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
