Why oh why??

In 2009 Jackie and Warren Hance lost their three girls in an automobile accident. You might remember…the girls were with their aunt, Warren’s sister, who drove the wrong way on a parkway and collided head on with another vehicle. In a moment their family was destroyed. What caught my attention in the People magazine laying on the floor was a quote by Jackie…

“I have stopped trying to figure out what happened. It’s a puzzle we can’t solve.”

Jackie came to understand that in order to heal she needed to let go of the quest to find an answer to the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ about the death of her daughters. There would never be an answer that would change the outcome or make the pain easier to bear. No amount of figuring or blaming would bring peace in her life. She had to let it go.

I wonder how much time we spend trying to figure out what happened or why it happened? Do we really think that we will come to a conclusion that will satisfy our desire to be whole? It might be things like…why doesn’t he love me anymore or why did I get cancer or why did they do this to me? What happened?  Maybe it’s…why is there so much violence in the world or why can’t we feed everybody or why did he kill all those people? What happened?

Examine your life…are you stuck trying to figure out the ‘what’ and the ‘why’? If so, you might decide to stop and…let it go. When you do, you will feel differently about life. You will feel as though there are more possibilities, that life holds promise, that there can be a new beginning. You might even realize that no matter what is happening around you or to you…you can always choose to love. When you let go of the ‘what’ or ‘why’ of whatever is holding you down you will open yourself up to experience peace.

Now that’s what we need more of…peace. Way to go Jackie!
